Initial Concept Testing

We conducted the initial concept testing in September 2022, with data collected from 30 participants, aged from 46 to 87 (average age 68 years old).

The findings show that 73% are very happy to participate and wear the badges. Reasons for wearing the badges include:

1) enjoying social interactions;

2) wishing to contribute to community building.

Places to wear the Happy to Chat badges include during shopping trips, public transportations, cafes, and other public spaces, e.g. interest clubs.

17% of the participants felt that they would not want to wear the badges. Their reasons include embarrassment, having privacy concerns, dislike to talk to strangers and depending on the areas.

There are also 10% of participant who were on the fence. Although they like and are supportive of the idea, but they have concerns about their own personal safety.

Happy to Chat pack revision

Following feedback from these participants, we have decided to revise the Happy to Chat pack by including:

  • A sticker at the back of each badge to remind people only wear the badge in places and times when they are feeling safe to participate in Happy to Chat.
  • A localised risk mitigation card, where we signpost local points of contacts for participants. If any participants feel unsafe when participating in Happy to Chat, they can reach out to the local point of contact for support. For example, please see the risk mitigation card, used for Uxbridge below.
